GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
(Pneumatology: Doctrine Of The Holy Spirit)
SECTION 1: 19 GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT
1. Gifts Of The Spirit (List 1-9)
a. 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
1. Wisdom
2. Knowledge
3. Faith
4. Healing
5. Miracles
6. Prophecy
7. Discernment (You Can Tell)
8. Tongues (Different Language)
9. Interpretation Of Tongues
b. Gifts Of The Spirit (List 10-13)
1 Corinthians 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
10. Gifts of The Apostle
11. Teacher
12. Helper
13. Administrator
c. Gifts Of The Spirit (List 14)
Ephesians 4:7, 11-16 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
14. Pastor
d. Gifts Of The Spirit (List 15-19)
Romans 12:6-8 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;
7 Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;
8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
15. Exorting
16. Giving
17. Ruling
18. Ministry
19. Showing Mercy
SECTION 2: RECEIVING OF GIFTS
1. Need To Be Baptized By The Holy Spirit Into The Body Of Christ
1 Corinthians 12:4, 13, 27 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
* How to be baptized into the body of Christ? we need to be saved by the gospel
2. Jesus Ascended Back To Heaven So That We Can Get The Gifts
Ephesians 4:7-11 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
3. Because Jesus Ascended, The Holy Spirit Can Descend
John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
SECTION 3: GIVING OF GIFTS
1. God's Gift Is According To His Will To Please God
1 Corinthians 12:11, 18 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.
2. God The Holy Spirit Puts The Right Kind Person To The Right Kind Of Place In The Body Of Christ
Ephesians 2:16, 21-22 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
3. Each Gift Is Perfect For Each Person
1 Corinthians 7:7 For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.
SECTION 4: PROPHET OF GIFTS
1. To Use The Gifts To Help The Christian Church
1 Corinthians 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
1 Peter 4:10 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
2. Everyone In The Body Is Absolutely Necessary
1 Corinthians 12:21-26 And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.
22 Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:
23 And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.
24 For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked:
25 That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.
26 And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.
3. The Are People Who Have False Gifts
Proverbs 25:14 Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.
SECTION 5: DESIRE OF GIFTS
1. Strongly Desire For The Best Gifts
1 Corinthians 12:31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.
2. Not Everyone Has The Same Gifts
1 Corinthians 12:28-31 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?
30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.
3. Prophecy Is The Best Gift
1 Corinthians 14:1, 39 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
* prophecy in biblical context means tell people about things in the bible, spread the word and not doing predictions like many are doing
4. The More Talents We Produce, The More Blessings We Gonna Get
Matthew 25:14-15, 20-23 For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.
15And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.
20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.
21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.
23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
5. The Gifts Are From God
James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
6. If Earthly Fathers Can Give You Gifts, How Much More Can Our Father In Heaven Give It To Us
Luke 11:8-9, 13 I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.
And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
1. We Are Not To Be Negligence With Our Gift
1 Timothy 4:14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
2. If We Are Not Going To Use Our Gift, God Is Going To Take It And Give It To Another
Luke 19:20, 24, 26 And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:
24 And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.
26 For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.
3. We Are To Improve Our Gifts
2 Timothy 1:6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
SECTION 7: UNAVAILABLE GIFTS
* There are 4 gifts not available today
* Healers, Miracle Workers, Tongues, Apostles
* These gifts are called signs of the apostles
1. Jesus Told The Apostles That These Signs Shall Follow Them That Believe
Mark 16:14-15, 17-18 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.
15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
* Jesus is speaking to the 11 apostles
* these signs shall follow them that believe
2. Sign Gifts Were Given To The Apostles
2 Corinthians 12:12 Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.
* The sign gifts faded away in the almost end of the apostle’s ministry and eventually died out when the apostles died out
a. Only Apostles Can Perform Signs And Wonders: Christians Had To Call Peter From Far Away To Raise Tabitha Who Died
Acts 9:37-38, 40-41 And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber.
38 And forasmuch as Lydda was nigh to Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not delay to come to them.
40 But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up.
41 And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive.
* Why did they have to wait for Peter to come to perform the sign?
b. Paul (An Apostle) Could Heal Or Cast Out Evil Spirits Just By Praying On Their Handkerchiefs Or Aprons
Acts 19:11-12 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:
12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.
c. The Apostle’s Power Of Signs & Wonders Were Immediate When They Were 100% Operational
Matthew 10:1 And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.
* Unclean spirits were immediately cast out, all sickness were immediately healed
3. Signs And Wonders Fading Away
a. Paul Did Not Heal Timothy But Asked Timothy To Take Medicine For His Stomach Problem
1 Timothy 5:23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities.
b. Paul Did Not Heal Trophimus But Left Him Sick
2 Timothy 4:20 Erastus abode at Corinth: but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick.
c. Paul In His Sorrow Did Not Heal Epaphroditus But Asked God For Mercy On Him
Philippians 2:25-27 Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellow soldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants.
26 For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick.
27 For indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.
* All these wouldn’t be a problem if he just healed them
* Its by God's mercy (same as Christians today) that we are able to have good health and its God that heals us and not through healers
* that’s why we pray for to God to heal people but we don't go seeking for healers
d. Paul Had Eye Problem And Could Not Even Heal Himself
2 Corinthians 12:7-10 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
Galatians 4:15 Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.
Galatians 6:11 Ye see how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand.
e. Paul Said If God Permit Only They Will Do The Signs And Wonders
Hebrews 6:2-3 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
3 And this will we do, if God permit.
* Seems to show that they don't have it anymore
4. Test The Person Who Say They Have The Gift
Revelation 2:2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:
