FLESH AND SPIRIT OF MAN
(Anthropology: Doctrine Of Man)
SECTION 1: INTRODUCTION

1. Flesh Is Not The Good Guy And Holy Spirit Is The Good Guy And There Is Always A Conflict Within Man
Galatians 5:16-25 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which
do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

SECTION 2: NAMES OF FLESH AND SPIRIT

1. Old Man Vs New Man
Colossians 3:8-10 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

2. Adam Vs Last Adam (Jesus)
1 Corinthians 15:45-47 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.
47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.

3. Carnal Vs Spiritual
Romans 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

4. Natural Vs Spiritual
1 Corinthians 15:46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.

a. Lost People Who Follow The Flesh Are Called "Natural"
2 Peter 2:12 But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;
1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

b. Saved Christians Who Follow The Flesh Is Called "Carnal"
1 Corinthians 3:1-3 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.
2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.
3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?

5. Outward Man Vs Inward Man
2 Corinthians 4:16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.
* Flesh = Outward Man, Spirit = Inward Man

6. Nature Of The Children Of Wrath Vs Divine Nature
Ephesians 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
Ephesians 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
2 Peter 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

SECTION 3: ORIGIN OF FLESH AND SPIRIT

1. It Came About By God When He Created Adam. Adam Had A Living Spirit Before He Sinned
Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
* Flesh = formed man of the dust of the ground,
* Spirit = breathed into his nostrils the breath of life
* Adam has a living spirit when God "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life"

2. Adam Has A Dead Spirit After He Sin
1 Corinthians 15:45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
* Adam = living soul, last Adam = quickening spirit (lively spirit)
* There is with a lively spirit (Jesus) with Adam, that means Adam had a dead spirit

3. Their Spirits Died When They Ate The Forbiden Fruit, Satan Lied To Them
a. God Said Adam Will Die If He Eat The Tree Of Knowledge Of Good And Evil

Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

b. Satan Lied Saying They Will Not Die
Genesis 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
* Satan will change God's word

4. How Death Was Inherited Or Passed To Us
a. Because Of Adam, We All Die, But With Christ, We Shall Be Made Alive

1 Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

b. Death Passed Upon Every Human Because Of Sin
Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

5. We Are All Born In Sin, But God Doesn't Count It As Spirit Dead Until We Know What Is Right Or Wrong
a. Everyone Is Born With A Sin Nature

Psalms 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

b.Sin Doesn't Start To Revive In Us Until We Know What Is Right Or Wrong
Romans 7:9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.
* Paul said he was alive before he knew the law but when he knew the law, sin is revived and his spirit died
* people who don't know right and wrong (babies or mentally ill people), even if they are born with sin nature, God will not count it as their spirit is dead

6. Old Testament Saints Have The Danger Of Loosing The Holy Spirit
a. David Begging The Holy Spirit To Not Leave Him

Psalms 51:7-11 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

b. Samson Lost The Holy Spirit And He Had To Ask For It Back
Judges 16:20, 28 And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.
28 And Samson called unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.

c. Holy Spirit Left Saul When He Sinned Against God
1 Samuel 16:14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

7. Difference Of Operation In The Holy Spirit Once Jesus Enters In The New Testament
a. 2 Births: Born Of The Flesh & Spirit

John 3:3-6 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again
* 1st Birth = Physical / Water Birth (Flesh)
* 2nd Birth = Spiritual Birth (Spirit)
* Unless we have these 2 births, we cannot enter the Kingdom Of God

8. Jesus Tells The Disciples That They Will Receive The Holy Spirit In The Future
John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

9. The Holy Spirit Is Made Alive For Christians And Difference Of Salvation With Old Testament
a. Regeneration And Renewing Of The Holy Spirit Born Again

Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
* regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; = the Holy Spirit was made alive

b. Quickening Spirit: Our Spirit Is Made Alive By Salvation Through Jesus Christ
1 Corinthians 15:45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

10. What Happens To Our Flesh? Our Bodies Are Now Considered To Be Dead Or Crucified. (Back Then, It Was Our Spirit That Was Dead When We Are Born In Sin But Now It Is Reversed)
a. Our Flesh Becomes Dead: If Christ Be In You, The Body Is Dead Because Of Sin

Romans 8:10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

b. Our Flesh Becomes Dead And Crucified: Our Old Man Is Crucified With Him
Romans 6:2, 6, 8 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:

c. Our Flesh Is Crucified & Dead: I Am Crucified With Christ
Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

d. Our Flesh Is Dead To God: Ye Are Dead
Colossians 3:3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

Note:
* If our salvation is not dependent upon the works of our flesh, then that means the holy spirit cannot come and go. Then it means that the holy spirit will never leave us no matter what we do in our flesh

11. What Happens To Our Spirit? The Spirit Is Sealed With Us Until The Rapture
a. The Holy Spirit Is Seal Within Us When We Believe The Gospel (The Gospel Is: Christ Death, Buriel And Ressurection, He Shed His Blood To Wash Away Our Sins)

Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

b. The Holy Spirit Will Be Sealed Within Us All The Way To The Rapture Despite How Much We Grieve It With Our Sin
Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
* day of redemption = rapture

12. Baptism Of The Holy Spirit Into The Body Of Christ, Our Body Becomes Dead, Our Spirit Becomes Alive, Circumcission of Christ To Cut Us Out Of Our Sinful Body
a. Baptism Of The Holy Spirit: Once We Receive Jesus Christ As Our Saviour, The Holy Spirit Baptized Us Into The Body Of Christ

1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

b. Our Body Becomes Dead: When We Are Baptized Into Christ, We Are Also Baptized Into His Death, Buried With Him By Baptism Into Death
Romans 6:3-5 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

c. Our Spirit Becomes Alive: We Are Risen With Him Through The Faith Of The Operation Of God
Colossians 2:12-13 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

d. What Is The Operation Of God? Circumcission Of Christ, A Spiritual Circumcission To Cut Us (Our Soul) Out Of Our Body Of Sins
Colossians 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
* our spirit became alive and sealed with the holy spirit and both our spirit and soul is separated from our body of sin because the holy spirit which is sealed inside us cannot touch sin. The sin in our body is not going to contaminate the holy spirit and our soul

* Eg Ice cube tray.
* Fill up water in the tray - ice becomes part of the tray
* Break up the ice from the tray but leave the ice in the tray - ice is no longer part of the tray - it is cut off but still in the tray
* God judges our soul for the sins done in our body
* If a save person sins with his body, it doesnt affect his soul
* The soul is not corrupted with sin no matter how many times we sin in our body => Once Saved Always Saved

SECTION 4: REPRESENTATION OF THE DEAD FLESH AND LIVING SPIRIT

1. Water Baptism
1 Peter 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
* Water Baptism is a representation of our flesh being dead and our spirit becoming alive
* Its not for salvation but for a good conscience toward God

2. Two Adams
1 Corinthians 15:22, 45 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
* Two Adams is a representation of our flesh being dead and our spirit becoming alive
* First Adam symbolises dead flesh
* 2nd Adam, Jesus Christ represents living spirit

3. Testimony
Romans 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
Revelation 3:1 And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.
Ephesians 5:14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
* Our testimony shows a representation of our flesh being dead and our spirit becoming alive

SECTION 5: CONFLICT OF FLESH AND SPIRIT

1. Understanding The Conflict
a. God's Spirit Which Is Holy Cannot Put Up With Flesh Of Man

Genesis 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

b. The Flesh Is Conflicting With The Spirit An It Grieves The Holy Spirit When We Sin
Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

c. Take Care Of Our Body Or God Will Destroy (Kill) Us
1 Corinthians 3:16-17 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

d. Our Bodies Need To Be Dead To Sin
a. We Gotta Tell Our Flesh That It Is Dead

Romans 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

e. Paul Says "I Die Daily"
1 Corinthians 15:31 I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.
* A dead corpse cannot commit sin

3. Flesh Brings Death But The Spirit Brings Life
a. The Flesh And Spirit Are Contrary To One Another

Galatians 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

b. If We Live By The Flesh, We Shall Die, If We Live By The Spirit We Shall Live
Romans 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
* Flesh brings death, spirit brings life
* That's why we should never yield to the flesh but to yield to the spirit

4. While Our Flesh Is Growing, Our Spirit Is A Baby Because It Conflicts
a. Are We Going To Sow Spiritual Things Or Carnal Things?

1 Corinthians 9:11 If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?
* Carnal = fleshy, worldly

b. We Will Remain As A Baby If We Seek Carnal Things
1 Corinthians 3:1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.

c. When We Are Learning The Bible, We Are Growing Up
1 Peter 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

5. Our Spirit Needs To Grow Up To A Man
Hebrews 5:12, 14 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

6. The More Sins We Commit In Our Flesh, It Will Corrupt Our Spirit
a. Our Own Spirit Can Be Corrupted By Sin

2 Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
* This is not referring to the Holy Spirit but is refering to the spirit of man

b. There Is A Holy Spirit And Our Own Spirit
1 Corinthians 2:11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

7. The Holy Spirit Warns Us In Our Conscience
Romans 9:1 I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,
Hebrews 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

8. The More We Ignore The Holy Spirit, We Are Giving In Into Evil Spirit And Our Conscience Is Not Going To Bother Us Anymore
1 Timothy 4:1-2 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

9. When We Keep Listening To Evil Spirit, Our Flesh Can Be Eventually Be Possessed By Satan
a. Our Flesh Is Delivered To Satan For Destruction

1 Corinthians 5:5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

b. Taken Captive By Satan
2 Timothy 2:26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

10. The Bible Warns Us To Keep Resisting The Devil
a. Don't Give Place To The Devil

Ephesians 4:27 Neither give place to the devil.

b. Submit Ourselves To God, Resist The Devil And He Will Fee From Us
James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

11. How Do We Avoid The Things Of The Flesh?
a. Things Of The Flesh Compared To Things Of The Spirit

Galatians 5:16-26 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

12. Although We Are Separated In Flesh, Our Spirit Is Still Together
Colossians 2:5 For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.

13. Our Spirit Is Currently Together With Christ Up In Heaven Right Now
Ephesians 2:5-6 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
* Our reservation is made in heaven because our spirit is waiting there

14. Once The Holy Spirit Baptises Us, We Are Automatically Joint Into The Body Of Christ, And Thats Why It Makes Sense That Apart Of Our Spirit Is Already Up In Heaven With Jesus And We're All Joined Into One Spirit Even We Are In Different Locations
1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
1 Corinthians 12:12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
21 And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.
22 Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:
25 That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.
26 And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.
27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

SECTION 6: RECONCILIATION OF FLESH AND SPIRIT

* flesh and spirit contradicts each other but one day, they will sync together

1. We Will Have A Superman Body When Our Flesh Will Be Transformed And Unite With Our Spirit Up In Heaven One Day
a. Jesus Immortal Body

Luke 24:39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

b. Once We Get Raptured, Our Earthly Body Will Be Transformed Into The Body Of Jesus Christ And Our Spirit And Soul Will Be Sync Together In Heaven
1 Corinthians 15:44, 49-57 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.
49 And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.
50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
