FILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
(Pneumatology: Doctrine Of The Holy Spirit)
SECTION 1: COMMAND FOR THE FILLING OF THE SPIRIT

1. One Can Quench The Spirit
1 Thessalonians 5:19 Quench not the Spirit.
* Quench = to stop
* Christians are not to quench the spirit but to fill the spirit

2. Christians Are Commanded To Be Filled By The Spirit
Ephesians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
* We are not to be drunk with wine
* Filling of the Spirit = Filling to be drunk.
* The filling of the Spirit has to be to the point like filling ourselves with alcohol. God condemns drunken alcoholic but the point here is to be like how an alcoholic craves for another drink to fill himself with. We have to do the same thing with the filling of the Spirit.
* Filling to be drunk: when we’re drunk, we’re out of control because we are being controlled by the drink. But when we’re filled with the Holy Spirit and we’re at that feeling where we’re drunk, we are not controlled by ourselves, we are controlled by the Holy Spirit.

3. Our Body Belongs To God Not Ourselves And We Are To Surrender Every Aspect Of Our Body To The Spirit
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

SECTION 2: EXPLANATION FOR THE FILLING OF THE SPIRIT

1. The Baptism Of The Holy Spirit Is Not The Filling Of The Spirit
1 Corinthians 12:13, 17, 27 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?
27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
* Baptism means to be immersed under. Baptism of the Holy spirt is to do with salvation.
* All of us have already received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and are already in the body of Christ when we got saved

2. When We Got Saved, The Holy Spirit Already Came Inside Us
Ephesians 1:13-14 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

3. What Is The Filling Of The Holy Spirit?
* The filling of the spirit has to do with filling up and adding more to a point where it may even overflow out

4. Why Do We Need To Be Filled? Because The Holy Spirit Can Grow Within Us
Galatians 4:19 My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,
* The Holy Spirit should not just stay inside but be formed inside us

5. Not Only We Need To Have The Holy Spirit Fill Us, We Need To Let The Holy Spirit Overflow Out Of Us So That It Can Affect Others
John 7:38-39 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
Isaiah 44:3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

SECTION 3: CONDITIONS FOR THE FILLING OF THE SPIRIT

1. Get Saved And Become A Son Of God
Galatians 4:6-7 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

2. Have A Strong Desire
John 7:37-39 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

3. To Constantly Ask For The Filling Of The Holy Spirit
Luke 11:5-9, 13 And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves;
6 For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him?
7 And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee.
8 I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.
9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
* Jesus is telling a story of a man who constantly knocking on the door asking for bread to eat. Finally the neighbour gives in * We are not asking for the Holy Spirit to be in us, but we are asking for more of the Holy Spirit to be in us

4. Yield In To The Spirit Rather Than The Flesh
Galatians 5:16-17, 25 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
* We need to confess our sins daily

SECTION 4: INAUDIBLE TONGUES FOR THE FILLING OF THE SPIRIT

* Audible tongues = a language

1. Peter Speaks In An Audible Tongue
Acts 4:8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,
* A saved christian does not speak in an inaudible tongue (blah blah blah)

2. Speaking In Tongues (Applied To The Jews During The Age Of Apostles) Meant Different Languages
Acts 2:4-10 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
* Its an audible language - speak in his own language, And how hear we every man in our own tongue,

2. Boldness To Preach The Word
Acts 4:31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

3. Victory
1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

4. Assurance Of Salvation: The Spirit Assures Us That We Are Saved Son God
Romans 8:14, 16 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

5. Very Good Testimony For Others
Acts 6:3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

* This verse is talking about Jesus

8. Strength Against Satan
Luke 4:1-2 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.

9. Expose Sin
Micah 3:8 But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin.

10. Sing Songs Of Praise & To Be Thankful To God
Ephesians 5:18-20 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

11. True Submission To Others
Ephesians 5:21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

12. Bear Much Fruit For The Glory Of God
John 15:5, 8 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Ephesians 5:9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
