DEATH OF CHRIST
(Christology: Doctrine Of Christ)
SECTION 1: PROPHECY IN THE BIBLE, FOR-KNOWN BY GOD

1. It Was Prophesied In The Bible
a. Prophesied In Isaiah

Isaiah 53 Entire Chapter
Isaiah 53:4-5
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

b. Prophesied In Daniel
Daniel 9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

c. Prophesied In Zechariah
Zechariah 13:7 Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.

2. Its For Known By God
a. Foreordained Before The Foundation Of The World

1 Peter 1:19-20 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

b. Determined By Counsel And Foreknowledge Of God
Acts 2:23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

c. God Already Planned It Out
Isaiah 53:6, 10 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

3. It Was Voluntary
John 10:18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

4. Purpose Of His Death
1 Thessalonians 5:10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. * So that He can take the death penalty for oursakes
* He died so we can live

5. Result Of His Death
1 Timothy 4:10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.
* He came as a saviour to all. He came to save us

SECTION 2: TERMS FOR HIS DEATH

1. Atonement: Payment Made To Bring Two Disputing Parties Together
Romans 5:11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

2. Propitiation: Satisfying To The One You Owed
1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

3. Substitution: Taking The Place Of The Condemned
John 10:11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

4. Redemption: Buying Back Someone With A Price
1 Peter 1:18-19 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

5. Reconciliation: Uniting What Has Been Separated
Romans 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

6. Ransom: Price Paid For The Release Of Someone
Matthew 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

SECTION 3: MODE OF HIS DEATH

1. Crucifixion On The Cross
Mark 15:24, 30, 32 And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take. 30 Save thyself, and come down from the cross.
32 Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.
John 20:25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.
Matthew 27:37 And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

2. Curse
Galatians 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

SECTION 4: PHYSICAL SUFFERING OF HIS DEATH

1. He Was Whipped
Mark 15:15 And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.

2. His Head Was Crush With A Crown Of Thorns
Mark 15:17-19 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,
18 And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!
19 And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.
* they put a crown of thorn on his head and they hit His head with a reed and the crown of thorns is crushing deeper and deeper into his head into his skull

3. His Torn Back Was Hurt By A Purple Robe
Matthew 27:28, 31 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.

4. He Was Beaten To The Point Of Hardly Looking Human
Isaiah 52:14 As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:

5. His Beared Was Plucked Out
Isaiah 50:6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

6. He Was Forced To Carry A Heavy Cross All The Way To His Execution
John 19:17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

7. He Was Pierced With Iron Spikes On The Wrist And Tarcels
Psalms 22:16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.

8. He Suffered Dehydration And Drank Vineger Instead Of Water
John 19:28-29 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

9. He Lost So Much Blood That Even Water Gushed Out Of His Side
John 19:34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
* That proved that Jesus lost every last drop of his blood for us

SECTION 5: MENTAL SUFFERINGS OF HIS DEATH

1. He Died In The Presence Of Sinners
Psalms 22:13, 16-17 They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.
16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.

2. He Was Betrayed, Abandoned And Denied By His Close Friends
Mark 14:10 And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief priests, to betray him unto them.
Matthew 26:56 But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.
John 18:25-27 And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.
26 One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him? 27 Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.

3. He Suffered Tremendous Shame And Embarrassment
Isaiah 50:6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.
Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Matthew 27:28-30 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.
Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

4. He Was Blasphemed
Luke 22:65 And many other things blasphemously spake they against him.

5. He Was Forsaken By God The Father
Psalms 22:1 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?

6. He Bore The Sins Of Everyman
Hebrews 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
1 Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

SECTION 6: OBJECTIONS TO THE DEATH OF CHRIST

1. Can Man Atone For His Own Sins?
Answer: No. In Order To Receive Remission Of Sin There Has To Be Blood Shed

Hebrews 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
* Remission means because your sins are forgiveness
* The one to whom we owe have the right to demand the fair payment

2. The Doctrine Of Christ Death Was Invented By Paul
Answer: No. Jesus Was The One Who Talked About It

Matthew 16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.
John 12:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

3. License To Sin: Won't This Make Religious People Feel Hopeless And Sin Even More
Answer: No. Its Actually The Opposite. The Agony Of The Cross Shows God's Hatred Of Sin And Discourages Sinning

Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
* the death of Jesus is so brutal and horrifying that's how heavy the price of sin is. God hates sin so much that he would brutally torture His own son. It does not give us a license to sin.

4. Erase The Sin Without Cross: Couldn't God Just Blot Out Our Sin Without Crucifixion?
Answer: No. God Cannot Do That. Every Sin Must Be Paid

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
* Do you think its right for the judge when you commited a crime that the judge simply wipes out your crime record? The key is justice. Crime must be paid.

5. If Sin Requires Eternal Suffering, Then Could A Few Hours In Calvary Count As Enough Suffering For Sin?
Answer: The Matter Is Not The Amount Of Suffering, But Rather That God's Holiness And Justice Had To Be Satisfied

Romans 3:25-26 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
* Its not time limit, it is the severity of the punishment. The important fact is that a holy sinless person having going through it is satisfactory enough for God. Jesus christ suffered the worst torture in history.
