BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
(Pneumatology: Doctrine Of The Holy Spirit)
SECTION 1: EXPLAINATION FOR THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

1. Baptism Means Immersion (Covered Under)
* Being baptized does not mean water baptism.

2. There Are Different Baptisms. John The Baptist Tells Us His Baptism Is By Water And Jesus's Baptism Is By The Holy Spirit
Mark 1:6-8 And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;
7 And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.
8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

3. These Verses Shows What Is The Holy Spirit Baptism
a. How Do We Receive The Baptism Of The Holy Spirit? Its By Becoming Part Of The Body Of Christ

1 Corinthians 12:13, 27 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
* when we get baptized by the Holy Spirit, that’s when we become part of the body of Christ

b. How To Become Part Of The Body Of Christ? It’s By Receiving Christ For Salvation By The Gospel
Colossians 2:6, 9-10, 17, 19 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
19 And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.
Ephesians 3:6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:
* Noticed Colossians 2:6 says we received Christ Jesus for our salvation and then the rest of the verses shows that we are already in the body of Christ
* when we receive Christ for salvation by the gospel, we automatically become part of the body of Christ

Note:
* How do we get the Holy Spirit baptism? It by getting into the body of Christ
* How do we get into the body of Christ? Its by receiving Christ for salvation
* So, when we receive Christ for salvation, that's when we receive the Holy Spirit baptism

SECTION 2: STAGES FOR THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

1. There Are 3 Stages In The Baptism Of The Holy Spirit: Death, Buriel And Ressurection
* When we get baptized by the Holy Spirit, these 3 things happen to us

a. Death: When Christ Died, He Became Sin For Us, Our Old Nature Of Sin Also Was Dead
2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Romans 6:4, 6 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
* The Holy Spirit baptism baptized us into the death of Christ
* So, like Christ was dead, our old nature of sin got destroyed and died

b. Buriel: When Christ Was Buried, Our Old Nature Of Sin Also Was Buried
Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Colossians 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
* The Holy Spirit baptism baptized us into the buriel of Christ
* So, like Christ was buried, our old nature of sin also was buried

c. Ressurection: Like Christ Was Ressurected, Our New Nature Also Ressurected (It Was Born, It Became Alive)
Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
* The Holy Spirit baptism baptized us into the resurrection of Christ
* So, like Christ was resurrected, we receive a new identity, our new nature was born and we become a new creature

Note:
* When we receive the Holy Spirit baptism, it is liken to Christ' death, buriel and resurrection.
* The Holy Spirit baptized us into all these 3 stages like what Christ went through
* Like Christ was dead, our old nature of sin also died, like Christ was buried, our old nature of sin also got buried and like Christ was resurrected, a new nature inside us got resurrected.and we become a new creature
* Now do you understand why after we got saved, we do water baptism? Its a picture of the Holy Spirit baptism.
* Do take note that water baptism doesn’t save us, its practiced just as a good conscience to God and not for salvation

SECTION 3: DISTINCTION OF THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Wrong Teachings:
* Many churches confuse the baptism of the Holy Spirit
* We are going to distinguish that from the other works of the Holy Spirit

1. It Is Not The Unction Or The Anointing Of The Holy Spirit
a. Unction Or Anointing Has To Do With The Abiding Presence Of The Holy Spirit

1 John 2:20, 27 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him
. * Unction or anointing has to do with the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit

Example:
* Many times we will say look at that preacher, he has the unction from God, the Holy Spirit just annointed him right there. And some people will say he just got baptized by the Holy Spirit right there.
* No. The preacher might have the unction or annointing, but he is not baptized by the Holy Spirit
* Because remember, the Holy Spirit baptized us when we got saved
* When we say the preacher has the unction or anointing, its because we can sense the presence of the Holy Spirit in him. The Holy Spirit is abiding in that man.
* The unction or annointing has to do with the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit
* Baptism of the Holy Spirit is not the unction or anointing of the Holy Spirit

2. It Is Not The Same As The Filling Of The Holy Spirit
a. The Filling Of The Holy Spirit Has To Do With Adding More Of The Spirit In Us By Works

Ephesians 5:18-21 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
* Noticed verse 18: Paul said to saved christians to be filled with the Holy Spirit. So this shows that it is not the same as the baptism of the Holy Spirit
* How to be filled with the Holy Spirit? Noticed verse 19-21
* Verse 19-21: "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God"
* Eg. When people sing mightily they can be filled with the Holy Spirit and we can sense that filling power of the Holy Spirit, that different atmosphere
* The filling of the Holy Spirit has to do with adding more of the Spirit in us
* it can happen multiple times, the Holy Spirit just fills up inside us

b. When The Holy Spirit Fills Within Us, It Can Be Added More. It Can Fill So Much That It Will Come Out Of Us And Affect Others Around Us.
John 7:38-39 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
* The Holy Spirit is not limited in size, it can grow smaller or bigger and overflow like rivers of living water
* That's why its important to know that when we are filled so much of the Holy Spirit, it will flow out of us and can affect others

Note:
* Baptism of the Holy Spirit is to be covered under (to be immersed) and it happens when we got saved but filling of the Holy Spirit is to put something in and even more after that

3. It Is Not The Same As The Gift Of The Holy Spirit
a. Gift Of The Holy Spirit Is About God Giving Us Gifts (Talents Or Skills)

1 Corinthians 12:4, 8-11, 13 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
* For context read verse 13: “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body,..."
=> So we get the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
* What happens when we are baptized by the Holy Spirit? Look at verse 4, 8-11
* There are many gifts of the spirit which we can receive: word of wisdom; the word of knowledge, faith, the gifts of healing, working of miracles;
prophecy; discerning of spirits; divers kinds of tongues; interpretation of tongues:

Note:
* How do we get the gifts of the Holy Spirit? When we are baptized by the Holy Spirit
* Baptism of the Holy Spirit is not the gifts of the Holy Spirit
* Baptism of the Holy Spirit gives us the gifts of the Spirit
=> When we receive Christ Jesus for our salvation, we receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit and then the Holy Spirit gives us all kinds of gifts (talents and skills)

SECTION 4: DOCTRINAL ERRORS CONCERNING THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

* This is where everyone messes up about the Baptism of the Holy Spirit

WRONG TEACHING 1

Wrong Teaching: Charismatics Use These Verses To Teach That If One Is Baptized By The Holy Spirit, They Will Speak In Tongues
Acts 2:38 Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 10:44-46 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
Acts 19:2-6 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

Answer (1): The Baptism Of The Holy Spirit Is Not The Speaking Of Tongues:
a. Baptism Of The Holy Spirit Means We Become Part Of The Body Of Christ By Receiving Christ For Salvation By Believing The Gospel

1 Corinthians 12:13, 27 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
=> These verses prove that Holy Spirit baptism is not the speaking of tongues.

Answer (2): Paul Says That Not All Saved Christians Can Speak In Tongues: The Holy Spirit Gives Us Different GIfts Of Talents And Skills
1 Corinthians 12:4-6, 8-11 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
* Noticed verse 10: “to another divers kinds of tongues”.
* So,only certain people have the gifts of the speaking of tongues

Note:
* All saved christians are baptized with the Holy Spirit but not all of them can speak in tongues.

Answer (3): Speaking In Tongues Was An Outward Evidence
* Jesus promised them He will baptized them with the Holy Spirit.
* How is Jesus going to prove it to them that they have received it?
* Jesus proved it to them by giving them the gift of speaking in tongues as an outward evidence
* So, when the people spoke in tongues, they know that they have already received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and what Jesus promised was true

a. These Verses Shows That Jesus Promised Them That They Will Receive The Holy Spirit And They Will Be Baptized By The Holy Spirit
John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
Acts 1:5, 8 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
* Jesus told them that in a few days later they will know and Jesus had to prove it to them.
* So, as proof of Christ’ promise, they received the speaking in tongues as an outward evidence

Note:
* The outward evidence by speaking in tongues to prove that they have received the Holy Spirit baptism only happened in those 3 chapters Acs 2, Acts 10 and Acts 19. It never happened again
* If Jesus proved it 3 times already, the other times when people got saved, it was to be taken by faith. From now on, they know that God will baptize them with the Holy Spirit and Jesus stopped the speaking of tongues
* So, Acts 2, 10 and 19 are just temporary events so that He can prove His promise to the people
* How do we know this? Because it never happened anywhere else in the bible after that and because we have seen tons of verses that when we receive the gospel for our salvation, we are baptized by the Holy Spirit

WRONG TEACHING 2

Wrong Teaching: Charismatics Teach That The Holy Spirit Baptism Is Not Just Salvation, One Gets Holy Spirit Baptism Multiple Times When One Speaks In Tongues. It Happens Many Times After One Gets Saved

Answer: The Holy Spirit Does Not Come And Go. After We Believed In Jesus For Our Salvation By The Gospel, We Are Sealed By The Holy Spirit Until The Rapture
Ephesians 1:13-14 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
* day of redemption = rapture
* The Holy Spirit came on us once after we got saved and seals up within us.
* He never left us. He is stuck within us until the rapture
* The Holy Spirit doesn’t come and go, come and go. It does not happen multiple times

Note:
* There are many charismatics who are worried about their salvation because once they finished speaking in tongues after their church service, they felt like the Holy Spirit left them and they got to get it back by speaking in tongues again
* That’s why they go back to church to speak in tongues again so that they can receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit over and over again
* We should not be worried like that because the bible teaches that born again christians salvation is eternally secured (once saved always saved)

WRONG TEACHING 3

Wrong Teaching: Charismatics Use This Verse To Teach That Believing Is Not Enough To Receive The Baptism Of The Holy Spirit, Its Seperated

Answer: These People Are Not Christians. They Are Jews From John The Baptist Ministry.
a. They Are Jews Who Were Baptised At John’s Baptism

Acts 19:3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.

b. They Tell Us That They Have Never Heard That There Will Be Any Holy Spirit In John’s Baptism
Acts 19:2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

c. During The Baptism Of John The Baptist, Nobody Knew Who Jesus Was. John Prophesied About The Coming Mesiah And John Is To Manifest Him To Israel That Is Why John Came Baptizing With Water.
John 1:26-31 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;
27 He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.
28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.
31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
* Noticed verse 26: “whom ye know not”
* Noticed verse 27: “He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me”
* Nobody knew who Jesus was. Only until the day when Jesus appeared that John was able to pinpoint that Jesus was the one he is talking about

Note:
* They don’t know who Jesus is. That’s why they did not believe on Jesus like we do.
* Maybe they believed in some form because John the baptist prophesied about their coming Messiah but nobody knew about the christian gospel (to believe in the death, buriel and resurrection of Christ)
* As a matter of fact, Jesus have not even died yet.

d. John Tells Us There Are Different Baptism. John’s Baptism Is By Water. Jesus Baptism Is By The Holy Spirit
Mark 1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.

e. Paul Tells Them No Wonder They Do Not Have The Holy Spirit Because They Took A Different Baptism
Acts 19:4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

f. What About The Believe This Verse Is Talking About? Their Believe Could Be Them Believing A Message From John The Baptist About Their Coming Messiah
Acts 19:2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

Note:
* That’s why it makes sense why since they believed they did not receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit
* These people are not new testament christians. They are Jews from John the baptist’ baptism (before new testament salvation).
* The believey they are talking about could be believing on John’s message about their coming Messiah
* Of course they will not be baptized by the Holy Spirit because they did not believe in the death, buriel and resurrection of Christ like we do
* They had water baptism rather than believing on the gospel for salvation to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit

2. How Did They Finally Get The Holy Spirit?
a. Its By Believing

Acts 19:4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

b. After They Believed, They Were Water Baptized, Paul Laid Hands On Them, The Holy Spirit Came On Them And Finally Only They Spoke In Tongues
* Noticed the speaking of tongues came so much later
* Speaking in tongues is seperated from salvation, and its separated from the baptism of the Holy Spirit
